H. Perron, which sells its seed packets throughout the province, notably through its online catalog as well as in several BMR and Agrizone locations within the cooperative network. However, this recognition does not fully reflect its commercial segment\u2014that is, the wide range of seeds adopted by many small and large market gardeners across Quebec. So, who is Norseco?<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"712\">Founded in 1928, the company was acquired in 2014 by two of its employees, Christine Ruckstuhl, Head of Research and Purchasing, and Christian Chartrand, General Manager, along with Uniag Cooperative.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"949\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Norseco has continued to expand ever since. Its seed catalog now includes more than 4,000 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants. The company also produces and distributes a variety of tropical and indoor plants.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>New international varieties tailored for Canada<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"55\" data-end=\"381\">Norseco\u2019s core business, however, remains vegetable production seeds, which is not always an easy task across Canada. The relatively small number of acres dedicated to fruits and vegetables unfortunately does not encourage major global breeders to conduct research aimed at developing seeds specifically suited to our climate.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"710\">\u201cThey rarely breed specifically for the Canadian market,\u201d explains Christine, \u201cexcept for carrots, onions, and peppers, for which we carry out preliminary selection adapted to local conditions. These are important crops. For other crops, at Norseco, we try to identify, among what is available elsewhere, what works best here.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"882\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u201cThe advantage of our position is that we have access to genetics from around the world,\u201d adds the seed specialist, noting that she works with nearly 80 global suppliers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Selecting fruit and vegetable varieties<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"39\" data-end=\"256\">The full process therefore begins with the breeder, who develops new crosses. This is followed by preliminary selection, during which the breeder further advances these varieties by testing them in different climates.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"258\" data-end=\"369\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Norseco then takes over to evaluate the selected varieties and test them specifically for the Canadian climate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Evaluation criteria<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"55\">Yield<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"58\" data-end=\"67\">Color<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"70\" data-end=\"81\">Texture<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"84\" data-end=\"102\">Size and shape<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"138\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Disease and insect resistance<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"141\" data-end=\"156\">Consistency<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"159\" data-end=\"171\">Maturity<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"174\" data-end=\"188\">Appearance<\/strong><\/li>\r\n \t<li data-start=\"46\" data-end=\"214\"><strong data-start=\"191\" data-end=\"214\">Market requirements<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-start=\"216\" data-end=\"364\">A pumpkin with a stem that is too pale or a pepper that is too elongated could be rejected. The market dictates customer preferences\u2014not just yield.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"366\" data-end=\"582\">Soil types also play a role. Sandy soils, black soils, across Quebec and Ontario\u2026 More than twenty valuable partner growers host the approximately 800 varieties tested annually by Norseco across 40 to 50 trial plots.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"842\">Coordination with growers is crucial. They are Norseco\u2019s eyes in the field on a day-to-day basis. Are the lettuces ready? A quick call, and it\u2019s time for a field visit\u2014ideally before harvest\u2014for evaluation. And it has to happen quickly: lettuce doesn\u2019t wait!<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"1142\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The top-performing varieties then move on to pre-commercial trials for final large-scale testing with a broader group of clients. While it could focus solely on large-scale market gardeners, its owners are committed to also offering smaller formats tailored to more modest producers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p data-start=\"260\" data-end=\"464\"><em>\u201cFor a grower looking to purchase seeds, there aren\u2019t a thousand options in Quebec,\u201d explains Christine. \u201cWe have a responsibility to offer a strong selection for everyone\u2014both small and large producers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"520\">\u2014 Christine Ruckstuhl, Head of Research and Purchasing<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"706\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u201cA few years ago,\u201d she adds, \u201cwe also explored launching an organic seed catalog. The organic sector includes many producers, often working on smaller acreages. They need support too!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Seed preparation and coating<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"60\" data-end=\"295\">Fall is a busy period, both for evaluating varieties and preparing for the year ahead. \u201cDelivery logistics are critical, especially for early-season crops. The earlier we work with suppliers, the better we can ensure on-time delivery.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"572\">Around fifteen seed treatments (pre-germination, coating, or pelleting) are also offered. However, everything is done directly in the United States, so logistics must be perfectly coordinated to ensure treated seeds are delivered to customers in time for the planting season.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"1147\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Will tariffs have an impact? \u201cYes, there will be increases,\u201d says Christine, adding that the real issue is not so much tariffs between Canada and the United States, but rather those imposed by the U.S. on other countries. As mentioned earlier, seeds come from all over the world, but they largely transit through the United States. At that point, some are subject to tariffs while others are not, depending on their origin. That\u2019s what will have an impact\u2014much to Christine\u2019s disappointment, as she would certainly have preferred to avoid the consequences of U.S. policies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Choosing the best varieties: an evolving expertise<\/h2>\r\n<p data-start=\"80\" data-end=\"230\">While Christine has become an expert in selecting different crops, she didn\u2019t always have such a sharp eye for the many categories offered by Norseco.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p data-start=\"232\" data-end=\"447\"><em>\u201cBroccoli is easier to evaluate\u2014it\u2019s either beautiful or it\u2019s not! Onions, I\u2019ve learned to master. I now notice the finer details from one onion to another, whereas at the beginning, they all looked the same to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"514\">\u2014 Christine Ruckstuhl, Head of Research and Purchasing at Norseco<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p data-start=\"516\" data-end=\"922\">Cabbages, even today, remain complex to assess because, much like onions, their appearance is often very similar. Lettuce, on the other hand, is a demanding crop in Quebec, and results are often inconsistent. \u201cOur climate isn\u2019t ideal for lettuce,\u201d she adds, noting that evaluation must also be done quickly, since once lettuce is ready in the field, it doesn\u2019t stay at peak quality for long before bolting.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"1307\">Finally, hidden beneath the soil lies one of Christine\u2019s favorite crops: carrots. \u201cI like carrots because you don\u2019t see them grow. You only see the foliage all season, and if you pull them too early, that\u2019s it\u2014you\u2019ve lost them. You really have to wait. You have no idea what the root looks like!
